Challenge

The City Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a low-cost solution to gain visibility into the use of our facilities, parks and open space for our city staff.

Background

The City of Carlsbad is a popular tourist destination and has a very active parks, open space, and trails system. Additionally, the City is responsible for managing part of its seven miles of beaches. Sensors have been used to get some user counts, but the City is seeking a low-cost solution to accurately provide data regarding the utilization of our assets. This could be coming from any data source. Additionally, the City trails system is very popular. Gaining better understanding of the use of our facilities, parks, open space and trails would help the city prioritize resources in those areas.

Requirements & Outcome

The Parks and Recreation department seeks a solution that would have the following outcomes:
  • Accurate data regarding the utilization of our beaches, parks, facilities, open space and trails
  • Provide information that could be used to assess maintenance needs
  • Provide notification when unauthorized entry in a location occurs
  • Help improve accessibility
