Historically, technology has been a driver of increased productivity and innovation gains in many sectors with government being a notable exception. The barriers to government adopting new technology are plentiful. Most significant is a shortage of public sector-specific solutions and more fluid pathways for governments to work with smaller technology companies. This has typically left government of all sizes with two primary options:
- Utilize technology intended for large, private enterprises, or
- Develop a collection of customized solutions that require significant investment of time and resources.
The STIR Program intends to bridge this gap by connecting public-sector agencies directly with technology entrepreneurs to seed product development that is specifically tailored to address public sector needs. With thousands of policy challenges, government has the potential to support a large ecosystem of best-of-breed technology solutions helping catalyze public sector innovation and technology.
